Clogged Ear Remedy – Ten Helpful Tips

Using a simple clogged ear remedy can make the inside of the ear feel much better, without as much pressure. A clogged ear occurs for a variety of reasons, usually from water being trapped inside or wax building up. While this type of problem is generally more uncomfortable than painful, it can become painful if not treated quickly.

While you could purchase expensive products or even go to the doctor, we suggest you try any of the seven options for a clogged ear remedy that can be done at home. These remedies work and in most cases, the ear would become unclogged and no further problems would exist. Of course, if the problem continues, becomes worse, or you have any concern, then talk to your doctor.

Open Mouth – The first clogged ear remedy involves keeping your mouth open all the time until the clog is gone. This means when blowing your nose or even sleeping, the mouth should remain open. You can purchase an inexpensive apparatus at the local drug store to help if needed.

Yawn – Another option would be to force a yawn. Usually, this can be done by opening the mouth wide and taking in a deep breath. It might take a few times to get a yawn to come out but it will. You should try to yawn every 15 to 30 minutes until the ear opens.

Swallow – Another clogged ear remedy that works is to swallow as often as you can. While you probably swallow anyway throughout the day, in this case, make the swallowing more pronounced and dramatic to get the full effect.

Heat – Another clogged ear remedy that not only opens the ear but can also help reduce discomfort/pain is to apply moist heat. This could be done with a moist heating pad or you could place a moist towel that has been heated a few seconds in the microwave. Now, you do not want the heat to be so intense that it would cause a burn but hot enough to draw wax or whatever else is clogging the ear out.

Chewing Gum – Many people that fly will use chewing gum while taking off and landing to avoid getting a clogged ear. However, for a clogged ear remedy when the clog already exists, chewing gum works by reducing pressure.

Antihistamine – If the clogged ear is the result of a cold or allergies, you might need to purchase an over-the-counter antihistamine.

Bath/Shower – You could also try taking a hot bath or shower for about 10 minutes as a clogged ear remedy. In this case, the steam, along with the hot water would help unclog the ears.

Hydrogen Peroxide – Sometimes, mixing two tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide with four tablespoons of warm water and then carefully poured inside the year makes a significant difference. For this clogged ear remedy to work, you would need to lie on your side, allowing the mixture to enter the ear. After five minutes, turn over with your head on a towel so it can drain.

Sweet Oil – For this, purchase sweet oil from the pharmacy and place about four drops inside the ear canal. Within five to ten minutes, you can actually feel the clog breaking up.

Ear Candle – Many drug stores now sell what are known as ear candles. To use this as a clogged ear remedy, you would need the assistance of another person. The process takes about 30 to 45 minutes but people that use it swear it works. This special candle is placed inside the ear and lit. The concept is that the wax and heat together pull the clog out or release it.
